Vic: Speeding sportscar double fatality sparks police warning
Police say a double fatality in Melbourne overnight involving a speeding high-powered
sportscar is a stark reminder to drive safely over the holiday period.
The Subaru WRX sedan struck and killed a pedestrian at Brunswick in Melbourne's inner
north before losing control and smashing into a power pole.
The front-seat passenger died at the scene.
Assistant Commissioner Traffic RAY SHUEY says it appears that excessive speed played
a part in the accident.
Mr SHUEY says Victoria's road toll had risen to 377, equal to Victoria's lowest ever
toll in 1997.
He says police are confident the state can remain fatality-free for the remainder of
1999, thus equalling the record.
