Fed: social security breaching pushing many into poverty - ACOSS

The Australian Council of Social Service says social security penalties have pushedmany unemployed people and students deeply into poverty.

ACOSS says data obtained under Freedom of Information laws reveals about $200 millionhas been levied in the past year.

It says Centrelink has levied some 260,000 penalties at an average of $800 each.

And it says the penalties are being imposed for infringements such as being late foran interview or failing to respond to a letter.

ACOSS says a third breach of the rules results in the withdrawal of a person's entiresocial security payment for eight weeks.
