Soc: Australia take 2-0 halftime lead over Serbia and Montenegro
The Olyroos have started their second pool game of the Olympic soccer tournament in
style, taking a 2-0 halftime lead over Serbia and Montenegro.
Goals to central midfielder TIM CAHILL and forward JOHN ALOISI were the difference
as the Australians look to get a step closer to a quarter-final spot.
The downcast Serbs, who were steamrolled 6-0 by Argentina in the first match, opened
up badly in the box after 11 minutes.
Defender CRAIG MOORE and recent Everton signing CAHILL were both unchecked from an
ALEX BROSQUE corner, CAHILL eventually heading home behind his leaping captain.
The Serbs looked set to equalise after 25 minutes when MOORE was dubiously penalised
in the square.
But Australian keeper EUGEN GALEKOVIC kept out the penalty from midfielder SIMON VUKCEVIC,
his diving save to the right spraying the ball well out of the trouble zone.
ALOISI then made it 2-0 in injury time.
