Fed: Study shows passive smoking affects young Australians

A study's found nearly half of those killed by passive smoking in Australia are underthe age of 15.

The National Drug Strategy study has found 224 Australians died from causes relatedto the inhaling of involuntary smoke in 1998 and 1999, with 103 of them under the ageof 15.

Passive smokers were also responsible for 77,950 hospital bed days at a cost of $47.6 million.

A coalition of health and trade union groups has used the report to call on the federaland state governments to speed up the banning of smoking from all workplaces followingthe report's release.

ANNE JONES, from anti-smoking group ASH, says Australia's lagging behind both Irelandand Norway, as well as several US cities, in declaring all workplaces smokefree, includingbars.
