CHESHIRE -- A 7-year-old girl who had been missing since Tuesdaynight in what was being termed a custodial dispute between herparents was found in a Portland, Maine, motel room early Wednesdaymorning, police said. Angelica Iomie and her mother were found byPortland police at about 1:30 a.m., Cheshire Police Lt. Kerry Deegansaid. Angelica's mother, Nereida Iomie, was arrested on charges offirst degree custodial interference and was held in a Maine jailovernight on fugitive from justice charges, Deegan said.
Nereida Iomie is scheduled to be appear in a Maine court thismorning for an extradition hearing, Deegan said, and provided shedoesn't fight efforts to return her to Connecticut, could be broughtback to Cheshire later in the day.
Angelica, who was not harmed in the incident, was brought back toConnecticut to her father, whom Deegan declined to identify. Thechild's parents are going through a divorce, Deegan said.
Motorcyclist injured in Shelton crash
SHELTON -- Police are investigating a Thursday morning crash thatinjured a motorcycle driver.
Detective Sgt. Kevin Ahern said the accident happened at about11:48 a.m. on Howe Avenue, near Myrtle Street. According to Ahern,the motorcycle was northbound when it came around a curve and leftthe roadway. The driver suffered a broken leg and a head injury, andwas transported to Bridgeport Hospital, police said.
Police did not release the driver's name Thursday. Police saidthe driver was conscious and talking at the scene of the crash.
Pedestrian hit by car in Wallingford
WALLINGFORD -- A teenage pedestrian was struck by a car Thursdayevening, police said.
According to a police dispatcher, the teen was struck at 7:20p.m. on Center Street and Route 5, and was taken to Yale New HavenHospital. Information on his condition was not available as of presstime.
Car catches fire after hitting pole
SHELTON -- There was an accident involving two vehicles onBridgeport Avenue Wednesday night, and one of the vehicles caughtfire after it struck a utility pole, police said.
One person was taken to Bridgeport Hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries, according to police.
Police said the person who had been driving the car that caughtfire was safely outside the vehicle when emergency respondersarrived. Police did not release the names of those involved in thecrash Thursday.
The accident, which happened at about 10:07 p.m. Wednesday, wasunder investigation.
Orange couple arrested on theft charges
WEST HAVEN -- A husband and wife accused of embezzling more than$100,000 from a local doctor's office where they once worked are duein court on Tuesday on larceny and other charges.
Lisa P. Lewis, 47, and Robert E. Lewis, 41, both of 399 SpringSt., Orange, were arrested Sept. 5 on charges of larceny, forgeryand conspiracy to commit larceny and forgery.
The arrests followed an investigation by the West Haven PoliceDepartment's fraud unit after an employee at Family Physicians ofWest Haven, 755 Campbell Ave., complained on May 9 that a largeamount of money was missing from the company's bank accounts, saidOfficer Angelo Moscato.
Lisa Lewis worked as an office manager in charge of the company'sbank accounts and her husband worked there as a property maintenancemanager, Moscato said. He said the investigation revealed she hadinflated her and her husband's salaries and had been counterfeitingcompany checks.
Both Lewises will be arraigned Tuesday.
W. Haven man gets jail for AOL scheme
NEW HAVEN -- A West Haven man was sentenced Wednesday to twoyears in prison for his role in a "phishing" and "scamming" schemethat targeted AOL subscribers, according to Nora R. Dannehy, actingU.S. attorney for Connecticut.
Daniel Mascia, 24, also was sentenced to three years ofsupervised release.
Mascia pleaded guilty March 17 to one count of conspiracy tocommit fraud in connection with access devices and one count offraud in connection with electronic mail.
According to court records, Mascia and others, including formerWest Haven resident Michael Dolan, conspired to "harvest" emailaddresses of AOL members from the Internet. The defendants thenspammed thousands of AOL subscribers with counterfeit e-mailmessages purporting to contain things such as greeting cards,according to a news release. When an AOL member attempted to viewthe purported greeting card, the person's computer would becomeinfected with software preventing the person from accessing AOLwithout entering personal information, including name, address,Social Security number, credit card number, bank account number andpersonal identification number.
Authorities say Mascia and other defendants used the informationto produce counterfeit debit cards, which they used at ATM machines,online and at stores to gain money, goods and services.
Dolan was sentenced to seven years in prison in August.
3 people arrested in Elm City drug raid
NEW HAVEN -- Police raiding a Fair Haven home late Wednesdayseized drugs and found three children, 5 and younger, unattended inan apartment.
Concluding a month-long investigation, officers executed a searchwarrant on a second-floor apartment at 40 Shelter St., police said.As task force members approached, two men on the porch ran insidewith police behind them.
According to police, one man was captured in the first-floorhallway, where he allegedly threw a plastic bag containing 13smaller bags of crack cocaine. The second ran to the second floorinto an apartment, where he threw two bags, one containing 15individual bags of crack and the other containing 8 Ecstasy pills,police said.
Inside, police also found three children, three months, 2 1/2years and 5 years, unattended.
The mother, Cherie Gordino, 23, was subsequently found walkingalong the street and claimed she had gone to the store. She wascharged with three counts of risk of injury to a minor.
The two men, Jeffrey Carmon, 20, of that address, and ReggieSpellman, 23, of 87 Nash St. were charged with narcotic violationsand interfering with police.
Officers stayed with the children until the Department ofChildren and Families responded to the scene and took custody of thechildren, police said. Police seized 28 bags of crack cocainepackaged for sale, 8 ecstasy pills and $810.
