Library revamp a huge success

THE NUMBER of books borrowed at a North library has soared byover 40% after a multimillion-pound revamp. Gateshead libraryreopened to the public on January 29, after a pounds 2.5mtransformation and extension by Gateshead Council.

And new figures reveal the number of books, CDs and DVDs loanedout in the average week has now increased from 5,000 to 7,000, witha massive 4,000 being borrowed in just six hours on the opening day.

Some 600 new members have also joined the library.

The library now boasts 75,000 books, a new art gallery, newcommunity rooms, a bigger and better cafe, an extensive referencelibrary, computers and internet access for the whole community, andthe Sound Gallery - the region's largest CD and DVD library.

Gateshead Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Councillor LindaGreen, said: "It's great to see that so many people have been takingadvantage of this brilliant community resource."
