Qld: Govt signs land deal with farmers, greens

Queensland Premier ANNA BLIGH has signed a new deal with rural landholders and conservationists
to protect the environment.

The historic agreement .. signed in Hughenden in north-western Queensland today ..

will provide landholders with lease extensions of 40 or 50 years in exchange for better
environmental management.

Ms BLIGH says the agreement has global importance.

She says because the Queensland government is the third largest landholder in the world
.. after China and Russia .. what it does with its land really matters .. not just to
Queensland and Australia .. but to the whole world.
