FED:HMAS Kanimbla to be retired

The elderly amphibious landing ship HMAS Kanimbla is to be retired early.

Defence Minister STEPHEN SMITH says Kanimbla needs extensive repairs at an estimated
cost of 35 million dollars and that will keep her out of service until mid-2012.

In any case, a detailed assessment of the ship's found the most cost effective and
lowest risk option is to decommission the vessel, set to happen in 2014.
